How to Choose Light Switches and Sockets for Your Project

Whether you are a contractor fitting a housing development, a hotel buyer standardising rooms, or a distributor selecting a range, choosing switches and sockets is a series of small decisions that add up to a big one. This checklist walks through each decision in the order that matters.

Step 1 — Fix the Socket Standard First

Nothing else matters until you know the plug standard of the project country. A UK housing project needs BS 1363; a German hotel needs Schuko or a hybrid; a Thai mall needs TIS. Selecting the standard early avoids expensive rework. If your project serves several countries, plan separate SKUs per standard and keep them visually distinct.

Step 2 — Choose the Material and Finish

The finish defines both the look and the price point:

For projects, confirm the material's flame resistance and mechanical strength meet local requirements before approving samples.

Step 3 — Plan Gang Counts and Functions

Walk through each room type and list the switching functions needed:

Standardising on one or two series across the whole project simplifies installation, spare parts and future maintenance.

Step 4 — Estimate Volume and Lead Time

Projects fail on schedule, not on design. Share your estimated quantity by SKU with your factory early:

Step 5 — Verify Certification and Samples

Ask for certified samples, not appearance samples. Check the markings (rating, standard, manufacturer) printed on the product and the packaging, and keep a reference sample from the approved batch for incoming inspection.

One series across an entire project. Huapai Lighting's slim, glass and skin-feel series cover switches, sockets and accessories in matching styles — so a hotel or housing project keeps a consistent look from lobby to bedrooms. See our UK range and full product catalogue.
