BS 1363 vs Schuko: Key Differences Explained
Two of the most common socket systems in Europe look nothing alike — and that is exactly why they are so easy to confuse when planning an import range. This guide breaks down BS 1363 and Schuko so you can stock the right product for each market.
What Is BS 1363?
BS 1363 is the British standard for 13A plugs and socket-outlets. The plug has three rectangular pins and an internal fuse rated to the appliance's cable. Because the fuse sits inside the plug itself, a BS 1363 system protects the appliance flex — a design that has been mandatory in the UK since 1947 and is also used in Ireland, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and many Commonwealth and Middle East markets.
What Is Schuko?
Schuko (short for "Schutzkontakt", meaning protective contact) is the German socket system, standardised as CEE 7/4. It has two round pins plus two flat earth clips on the sides of the socket. Schuko is rated 16A at 230V, is unpolarised, and is used in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and several other continental European countries.
Side-by-Side Comparison

|---|---|---|
| Pins | 3 rectangular | 2 round + side earth clips |
| Rating | 13A, 230V | 16A, 230V |
| Fusing | Fuse inside plug | No plug fuse |
| Polarised | Yes | No |
| Typical markets | UK, Ireland, MY, SG, HK, Middle East | Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain… |
| Certification | BS 1363 compliance | CE marking (LVD/EMC) |
What This Means for Your SKU List
- Separate SKUs, separate pages. A buyer searching for "Schuko socket" will not buy a BS 1363 product. Keep your UK range and EU range clearly separated, in your catalogue and on your website.
- Certification is market-specific. BS 1363 products are certified against the British standard; continental products rely on CE marking. Confirm certificates before committing to a container.
- Voltage is similar, design is not. Both run at ~230V, so the difference is purely mechanical — which means your marketing and product photos must show the correct plug shape for each market.
A Quick Check Before You Order
- List each target country and its exact socket subtype (BS 1363, Schuko, French, Italian…).
- Confirm the certification each market requires from an importer.
- Ask your factory for certified samples before bulk production — not just appearance samples.
